Harry's Homework

Homework - What we know so far.

First of all, we covered media forms also known as sectors texts and industries. There are many different media forms these consist of the following social media, radio, advertisement, television, films, music and many other forms on the internet. Secondly, we went over the stages of production whilst creating a piece of media these consist of; pre-production, production and post-production, post-production is also known as editing. Next, we covered genre, genre relates to everything to do with media in general if it is a media form it has a genre. There are many different genres and there are also many sub-genres and hybrid genres. A sub-genre is a subdivision of a genre so, for example, fiction and non-fiction are two different genres whereas suspense fiction is a sub-genre. A hybrid genre is a cross or a mix of two genres. Iconography also helps the audience sometimes define the genre of the film because some objects may be linked to certain genres, for example, a dagger could be linked to a horror movie. Then we started to look at intertextuality this is where to big Tv shows or films cross over to create references in each of the media forms. this can be seen when Family Guy and the Simpsons do a crossover episode this is also done for publicity and promotion because if the audience is fans of one show the crossover episode may help the audience also become fans of the other media form. We also looked at parodies, this is mainly done to pay homage to the original media form. We also had a look at why and what reasons record labels want to promote their new media. This is mainly done to promote either the artist, the genre or the record label but this can also be done to indirectly promote a "way of living" and a "way of thinking". Next, we had a look at 6 major record labels between 1988 to1999 these consisted of Warner music group, EMI, Sony Music, BMG, Universal music group, and Polygram. These record labels are still the most popular today but a newer record label has also risen to one of the major record labels and is known as Independent labels. Next, we studied codes and conventions of popular music videos. codes and conventions are what people would expect to see in that genre of the music video for example in a rap/hip-hop music video it wouldn't be a surprise if you saw materialistic items and lots of money or in a love song, you would see lots of romantic scenes. We also covered stereotypes and counter-types a stereotype is an assumption about a certain type of people, for example, different races or genders, sexuality etc. There can be positive and negative stereotypes, for example, a negative stereotype is that "all black people are criminals" this is a negative stereotype because it is not a true fact but is just something that people associate with a certain kind of people. A positive stereotype could be that "The French are good cooks". This is seen as a positive stereotype because it is not shaming or being rude about the type of people. A counter-type is when people go against the stereotype for an example "all religious people are kind".  This is what I have learned so far and hope to learn more.

Music videos increase the income for record labels because they promote the record label in the music video this helps the record label develop a popularity and a following this will help increase income because more up and coming artists are more likely to work for a more well-known record label, therefore, increasing the income. Music videos can promote other sectors of media for example "Happy" is a song by Pharrell Williams that promotes the film "despicable me 2" by having characters from the movie dancing in the background of the music video.
